Abstract: Proper implementation of systems engineering practices reduces costly rework and manages scope to inform the system lifecycle efficiently and defensibly. Similarly, the scope of the implementation of systems engineering must be managed and scaled appropriately. Models-based systems engineering (MBSE) reaps the majority of its benefit during the execution of system verification activities and subsequent collection of generated verification data.

Agile approaches to system verification rely heavily on the ability to “right size” the scope of verification activities modularly based on the qualification needs and risk appetite for the program. To meet this need, models-based approaches must scale appropriately based on expected costs and effort behind verification activities.

By working with the Qualification, Test, and Evaluation Program Directors at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the system engineering team developed a graduation of verification model frameworks commensurate with increasing verification activity complexity, in this case ranging from 1 to 8, respectively. Using this gradient, a series of MBSE framework models can support additional use cases from the verification system engineering leads simply reporting qualification data back to the system model, to supporting the recursive set of systems engineering processes required to execute complex tests.

Speakers:

Nicole Davis is a Future System Architect at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) with 7 years of experience in mechanical engineering and 5 years of systems engineering experience. Nicole obtained a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). She has worked for Allegion and Eaton as a sustaining engineer, where she supported system development through additive manufacturing and improved production capabilities. She has also worked as a project engineer at Hydro Gate where she designed, developed, and sustained water control gates for various customers nation-wide. In her current role as a systems engineer, Nicole has been focusing on requirements engineering and developing a framework for verification and validation via model-based system engineering for various customers.

Kaelin Glover, CSEP, has 8 years of systems engineering experience at nuclear production and design facilities at LANL spanning from risk and nuclear safety specialty engineering fields to system architecture and design. Kaelin has a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering and a Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering. Currently, Kaelin and Nicole’s team, Future Systems Architecture as a part of the Advanced System Development Group at LANL, is leading the transition of LANL’s systems engineering practices toward industry best-practices an implementation of models-based engineering methodologies at LANL throughout the system lifecycle.
