Abstract: Engineered system failures are often driven by materials- related issues, making the integration of materials considerations throughout the system engineering lifecycle essential to system success. Understanding how materials contribute to system behavior- including their performance, interactions, degradation, and failure modes- supports more informed decisions about design, selection, characterization, specification, verifications, and lifetime validation. The materials earlier and more explicitly in the Se process, with and MBSE model demontrating initial efforts to integrate materials into lifecycle-based system engineering.
Speakers:
Paul DeSantis is an academically trained and certified Systems Engineer with an emphasis in the technical process of requirements and cross-cutting method of SysML modeling. A member of INCOSE for 17 years, he helped beta test the first OMG certification on SysML back in year 2010. Paul’s expertise is electronic and mechatronic systems. He currently works for BAE Systems at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Tennessee, defining requirements and concept of operations for process planning on chemical manufacturing.
Celeste A Drewien worked over three decades in national security at Sandia National Laboratories. She specialized in systems analyses and materials and packaging issues as related to high consequence hardware systems. Celeste currently works for TechSource INC., a Salas O’Brien Company, as a Senior Technical Advisor. She has a PhD in Material and Science and Engineering from Lehigh University.
Andy Vance is a systems engineer at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California with over 27 years of national lab experience (7 years at Lawrence Livermore National Lab and 20 counting at Sandia). He joined Sandia as a chemist in 2006 and transitioned into systems engineering in 2018. His current focus is on material compatiblility and qualification. Andy has a BS in Chemistry and a BA in German from Trinity University and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Kansas.
Nathaniel Smith, ASEP, has four year of systems engineering experience at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). He has a B. S. and M. S. in biomedical engineering from the university of Arizona and is pursuing an M.S. in materials science and engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Nate currently serves as an R&D engineer in the Advanced Systems Development group at LANL and participates in system design, trade studies, and materials science work.
